Materials Used
Waterproof
Today's military boots have uppers made of leather and canvas. A combination of these materials allows the military boots to become waterproof. This feature is important especially during warfare in damp and wet areas.
Lightweight
Leather and canvas are also lightweight. This allows soldiers to move faster as they carry only a few pounds on their feet.
The said features are in contrast to trench boots which were entirely made of cowhide. These boots normally allowed water to enter their insoles. The excess water results to a heavier boot. Moreover, the cowhide used in trench boots was generally heavy. Trench boots sometimes weigh more than four pounds.
Specialized Soles
Currently issued military boots have soles that give more grip and stability.
Vulcanized rubber
Military boots often have outsoles made of sturdy vulcanized rubber.
Panama, Vibram, or lug soles
Military boots have sole designs that range from Panama, Vibram, to lug soles. These designs prevent slipping while walking or running in uneven surfaces.
Oil and flame resistant
Military boots are fitted with multi-layered and oil and flame resistant soles. These features are crucial in armed combat. They also allow soldiers to walk in places which ordinary footwear cannot tread on.
The said sole designs are a huge step from past military boots. Older styles of boots were made of synthetic or reclaimed rubber. These materials provided relatively less traction and could be worn out easily. Flames and other substances easily destroy the one-piece soles fitted in earlier boots.
